Canadian singer Kris Wu gets 13 years’ jail for rapes in China

BEIJING: A Beijing court sentenced Canadian singer Kris Wu on Friday to 13 years in jail after finding him guilty of crimes including rape, just over a year after his arrest in China, where he was born and built a lucrative career. The court in the district of Chaoyang said investigation showed that from November to December 2020, the 32-year-old, who is also known as Wu Yifan, had raped three women. Wu was detained on July 31 last year after an 18-year-old Chinese student accused him of inducing her and other girls, some of them younger than 18, to have sex with him. The court also found him guilty of the crime of assembling a crowd to engage in sexual promiscuity in July 2018, it said.
Wu, who was born in China but has Canadian nationality, shot to fame as a member of the K-pop boyband EXO in the 2010s. He became one of China’s biggest celebrities after carving a solo career as a singer, actor, model and variety show judge. However, brands including Louis Vuitton, Bulgari, L’Oreal Men and Porsche have suspended their partnerships with Wu over the case. The Canadian embassy in Beijing is yet to comment. The court said Wu would be deported, although lawyers said such deportations take place after completion of the sentence.
